Natural Susceptibility to Coastal Erosion

Areas likely to be susceptible to coastal erosion based on natural features including the height and geology of the land (relative to sea level), distance to the sea and wave action.  This map does not take account of existing flood or coastal erosion protection structures and does not indicate areas that will erode or the timescales over which coastal erosion could occur.   This information will help inform appropriate coastal flood risk management decisions actions and should not be viewed in isolation.

This map shows the predominant direction of sediment movement (where known). Sediment present on beaches / the shoreline is not static and is usually moved along the shoreline in the direction of the prevailing wind or waves.  This is known as longshore drift.  The direction of longshore drift is important to help inform appropriate coastal flood risk management actions.
