Offshore
Any business working within the offshore oil and gas industry
needs to be aware of their environmental obligations. SEPA is
responsible for regulating the disposal of radioactive waste from
offshore oil and gas installations and is responsible for ensuring
the correct handling and disposal of all wastes, including special
wastes, which are brought to shore.
If radioactive substances are not disposed of properly by the
offshore oil and gas industry, they can contaminate water and sand
and ultimately enter the food chain. Given the obvious risks to the
environment and human health, any business found to illegally
deposit radioactive waste runs the risk of being fined for its
actions.
SEPA is responsible for granting authorisations for the
accumulation and disposal of radioactive wastes to minimise the
impact on the environment and human health. We can also work
directly with companies to give advice on the disposal of waste.
The application form for authorisation to accumulate and dispose of
radioactive waste is available from SEPA via the ‘Application
forms’ tab at the top of this screen.
